From Archive to City: reconstructing the Urbanism of a Roman Colony in Numidia
Founded in 100 AD during the principate of Trajan, The city of Timgad, officially known as Colonia Marciana Traiana Thamugadi, is located in Numidia. Since the 1870s, it has been the subject of almost continuous archaeological exploration until the 1960s. However, despite several decades of excavations, our understanding of its urban organization remains incomplete—largely due to the interruption of field research for nearly a century and the scattered nature of the archives produced during the various excavation campaigns. The Timgad Digital Project is based on the inventory, classification, and cross-analysis of documentation from excavations carried out between the 1880s and 1960s.

• create a digital database of Timgad’s excavation archives;
• develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) that incorporates historical documentation;
• carry out a historiographical and comparative study of the different excavation campaigns;
• refine our reading of the city’s urban evolution (chronostratigraphic study of public buildings and the road network, identification of modern restorations resulting from the excavations);
• lead to the publication of a scientific monograph.

The Timgad Archives offers a critical and original reinterpretation of the urban archaeology of the Roman city of Timgad (Algeria), based on a cross-analysis of excavation archives produced between the 1880s and 1960s.
The project is grounded in a serial inventory and comparative study of a vast body of historical documentation, most of which remains unpublished and underexplored: excavation notebooks, plans, photographs, models, drawings, and casts. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on urban archaeology, building archaeology, and the history of archaeological practices and knowledge production.
This approach aims in particular to reconstruct the main phases of intervention on this major site of Roman heritage in North Africa, and to assess the structural transformations brought about by the excavations—restorations, anastylosis, the disappearance or redesign of certain areas—as well as their material and interpretive impact on our current understanding of the ancient city. The urban study will focus especially on major public buildings and the road network, through a critical reading of historical sources cross-referenced with analysis of the preserved structures.
The project stands out for its innovative approach, prioritizing an exhaustive analysis of the archives at the scale of the entire urban fabric. This alternative method seeks to renew the study of urban archaeology in a provincial city of Roman Africa, by reconstructing its spatial and architectural transformations.
